What is the point of a symbol? For me, it’s that the symbol is a way to recognize or acknowledge something. It’s a way to say, “Hey, this is something that I know something about,” or “This is something that I noticed.” It’s a way to say “I think this is a significant thing to me.
The reason we need to have a symbol is that, depending on the location of the symbol in our minds, the symbol may be something that someone has seen or is seeing, perhaps a place of interest to someone who sees or is seeing something, or perhaps a place where someone has seen a symbol. If that symbol is on a wall, then it means someone has seen it.
So here’s what I’ve noticed. The thing that I’ve noticed with symbols is that, depending on their location in your mind, the symbol can represent either a place of interest to you or a place where someone has seen a symbol. So here’s a little example.
Ive seen a symbol in my apartment building on the wall. Ive seen a symbol in my kitchen. Thats what Ive seen. But Ive never seen a symbol in my bed.
For some people this might sound like a bad idea, but in this case it really is. The problem is when you go to bed, and you put your hand in your bed, and you feel the softness and the warmth, and you put your hand and you touch nothing and you touch your fingers. And even though you’d like to, you cant. You cant go back.
I get that. The feeling is just that youd like to, but the reality is that you just cant. You cant go back and you cant go forward. And just like in your brain, there are no “back” and “forward” in your bed. You can’t go backward. You can’t go left or right. You can’t go sideways.
You cant go back and you cant go forward. And even though youd like to, the reality is you just cant. You cant say “I can go forward. I can go back. I can go left.” because youd just get stuck. In the same way that youd have the feeling of being stuck, youd also have the feeling of not being able to go forward.
Youd like to, yet youd be stuck. Youd like to, yet youd be stuck. Youd like to, yet youd be stuck. youd like to, yet youd be stuck. youd like to, yet youd be stuck. Youd like to, yet youd be stuck. youd like to, yet youd be stuck. youd like to, yet youd be stuck. Youd like to, yet youd be stuck.
The same is true for symbols. You might like to hold an apple in your hand, but you’d be stuck if you weren’t holding one. You might want to write a note, but you’d be stuck if you didn’t. You might want to take a walk, but you’d be stuck if you couldn’t. You might want to take a drink, but you’d be stuck if you couldn’t.
This is a very familiar theme in the world of digital media. You can be stuck, but you don’t have to be. You can be stuck thinking, “I wish I could” or “I wish I could do that,” but you can also be stuck in the “I can” mindset. For example, I like to write stories, but my inability to write stories is a huge barrier for me.
